This year I am committed to helping you grow your practice. As such, I’ll be rolling out new content across multiple platforms throughout the year. I have created a series of lessons which, over the course of the year, will cover all seven of the critical business skills I think one must master to transform from a solo to the CEO of a high-impact, high-revenue generating practice.

My goal is to help you develop a business that is a true reflection of your core values and goals. Right now, it is possible you aren’t where you want to be, and maybe a little unsure of what is missing or how to get what you want. We don’t know what we don’t know, and I am here to help you expand your knowledge and your thoughts about all that is possible. Perhaps you have only been exposed to one way of doing business or have let the beliefs of others limit your potential.

It is my desire to introduce you to new ways of thinking, so you can feel confident in attracting new, ideal clients, generating money whenever you need or want more, and expanding your impact in the world. We all have a vision of how we want to show up in the world, right? We want to be change makers, industry leaders, and successful entrepreneurs. Success, however, comes in many different shapes and sizes. What is right for one person may not be right for another.

Really, in the beginning, there is no right or wrong way to grow your business. It’s only about making choices that feel right for you. It’s not until your success stresses you out, you begin to feel unappreciated, and your love for what you do fizzles that you run into a problem. And that is ultimately what happens when you cling to the solo’s favorite philosophy: “If I want it done right, I’ll just have to do it my damn self.” I understand the need for you to want to be involved in every aspect of your business, but there is a price to pay if you aren’t strategically positioning your business for growth. Hustle will only get you so far. Before you know it, you are playing a very dangerous game of whack-a-mole with your health, your relationships and your well-being, until you are forced to choose between your personal needs and the needs of your business.

So, let me ask you: Are you operating your business as a solo or as a CEO?

Solos:

  • Think: “If I only had time, I would do it myself.” We believe the issue is that we don’t have time but the real issue is that we are not thinking big enough and cultivating the systems and support we need to grow.
  • Believe we are the best person for every job in our business (there’s that time thing again), but we are wrong. It’s arrogant to think every task in our business that needs doing is best done by us. In fact, most of us are only really excellent at one or two things, though we may be “good” at several more. It’s our focus on the “good” that holds us back.
  • Focus only on short-term goals because our time or resources are limited. We live in a reactionary state because we rarely choose to create enough space for long-range planning. We get so busy working “in” our business, we forget to work “on” our business.
  • Laser-in on expenses, cutting costs, and saving a penny but spending a fortune in high-value time instead of focusing on high-revenue generating activities that could create more for us than we ever thought possible.
  • Micromanage the details instead of learning the skills we need to hire, train and trust a support team to handle those details for us so we can concentrate on executing our vision.
  • Feel guilty when we take time off. If we even take time off at all.
  • Operate from a place of fear of what could go wrong (we like to call it “reality”) instead of shifting our focus to all that is possible.
  • Suffer from analysis paralysis and indecisiveness because we have a fear of missing out. We think: “But what if I make the wrong decision.” Instead of: “Whatever decision I make I will make the decision right for me.”

CEOS, on the other hand:

  • Work fewer, but more productive hours because they focus their time and resources on activities that will allow them to operate at their highest level of performance.
  • Get adequate rest and engage in daily self-care.
  • Delegate and outsource the details.
  • Make time for continuing education, skill development and working ON their business.
  • Are visionaries who have learned how to cultivate the resources they need to achieve their goals without sacrificing their wellbeing.
  • Allocate time, space and emotional energy to be creative.
  • Are willing to invest in professional development—for both themselves and their team. • Focus on growth, gaining market share, and driving revenue to increase profitability.
  • Trust others with the details.
  • Are confident in their decision-making skills and abilities.
  • Embrace failure and know that the ability to take risks is more important than the fear of Other People’s Judgment.

So, what about you? Did you see yourself on either of these lists? If you realize you are operating as a “solo” (even though you may have one or two people working with you), and you are ready to step it up so you can transform your business and become a CEO who leads a high-impact, high-revenue generating business, here are three actions steps you can take to get started: 

Action #1: Evaluate every task on your to-do list critically and ask yourself: “Am I truly the best person to do this job?” Do a cost and time analysis of what those tasks would require you to do yourself at your top hourly rate versus the cost to outsource. Also consider how long it will take you to figure something out instead of hiring a professional who specializes in that function. It is critical you understand how you are spending the majority of your time and to make the necessary adjustments. Commit today to begin buying back your time and creating not only a business you love, but a lifestyle you love as well.

Action #2: Make a list of three to seven of your core values, and then think about how you will cultivate a team that shares your core values.

Action #3: Begin to document your day-to-day operations and processes so that you can eventually hand them off to your team. Better, yet, engage your team in helping you to document all of your firm’s processes. I hope that today’s lesson didn’t ruffle your feathers too much.
